Dr. María del Carmen Mata Martín
María del Carmen Mata Martín is a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the Extremadura Health Service, where since 2019 she has worked as a clinical geneticist with a key role in coordinating, and strengthening the Pharmacogenetics Laboratory at the University Hospital of Badajoz. In recent years, she has contributed to the clinical implementation of pharmacogenetics within the regional health system, participating in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic workflows, the design of genetic testing panels, the validation of laboratory methodologies, and the integration of pharmacogenomic results into routine clinical practice.
She holds a PhD in Genetics from the University of Extremadura, where she developed a research line focused on the molecular biology of DNA replication and the cellular mechanisms underlying thymineless death, resulting in several first‑author publications in international journals. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH, United States), working in the RNA Biology Department and advancing her expertise in molecular biology, transcriptomics, and the spatial organization of the bacterial chromosome.
Her teaching activity includes practical instruction in genetics and molecular biology at the University of Extremadura, as well as supervising undergraduate and final‑degree research projects in pharmacogenetics. Through her combined clinical, scientific, and teaching experience, María del Carmen Mata Martín plays a key role in strengthening pharmacogenetics as an essential component of personalized medicine within the public healthcare system of Extremadura.
