Prof. Guillaume Pare
Guillaume Paré, MD, M.Sc., FRCP(C)
Director, Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory; Professor of Medicine, McMaster University
Dr. Guillaume Paré is a distinguished medical biochemist, geneticist, and professor at McMaster University, where he serves as the Director of the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory (GMEL) and Deputy Director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI). He is also a University Scholar and a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine. With a clinical focus on lipoprotein disorders, obesity, and cardiovascular disease prevention, Dr. Paré has made significant contributions to the field of cardiovascular genetics, pharmacogenomics, and biomarker development.
Dr. Paré completed his M.D. and residency in medical biochemistry at the University of Montreal, followed by a Master’s in Human Genetics from McGill University. He further honed his expertise at Harvard Medical School, working with leading experts in genetic epidemiology. Over his career, Dr. Paré has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in top journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Circulation, and European Heart Journal. His research combines high-throughput screening with genetics and bioinformatics to identify novel biomarkers related to cardiovascular disease.
An expert in cardiovascular genetics, Dr. Paré’s work has led to groundbreaking insights in gene-environment interactions and the development of novel methodologies for predicting disease risk, including polygenic risk scores and Mendelian randomization. His contributions to pharmacogenomics have influenced clinical guidelines for the use of drugs like clopidogrel, and provided insights into use of dabigatran and aspirin in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Dr. Paré is recognized as a leader in his field, having received numerous awards, including the Canadian Association of Medical Biochemists’ Research Achievement Award and the University Scholar Prize at McMaster University. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2018. He is a frequent reviewer for leading scientific journals and funding agencies and has delivered lectures in over 25 countries. As a mentor, Dr. Paré has trained numerous postdoctoral fellows, PhD candidates, and undergraduate students, many of whom have pursued successful careers in medicine and research.
His ongoing research, funded by prestigious organizations like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, continues to focus on the genetic and molecular underpinnings of cardiovascular disease, with the goal of improving disease prediction and therapeutic strategies.
